The Development of Center for the Advancement of Cancer Survivorship Care Delivery (CASCADE) Center.
Govt. Funding: National Cancer Institute (NCI)
Grant Type: Implementation Science for Cancer Control: Developing Centers (P50)
Submitted: February 2019

Expected Period: 09/01/2019 to 08/31/2024
[modal_window title="CANCER SURVIVORSHIP CENTER" invoke_title="PROJECT BRIEF" id="cascade-center-modal" show_on_load=""]The overarching goal of the CASCADE (Center for the Advancement of Cancer Survivorship Care Delivery) P50 developing center is to build the research capacity and research-practice partnerships needed to accelerate translation of survivorship evidence-based interventions (EBIs) into care. One of the two initial pilot studies for CASCADE will use EHR and GIS data to develop a computational method for identifying DLDCCC catchment area survivors who are at greatest risk for second cancers/other comorbidities. Its innovation is in establishing a method for assessing contextual factors that affect a key implementation outcome, reach, early in the intervention process, instead of after the intervention has already been developed.[/modal_window]
Effect of school-based dual-use park implementation on physical activity in adults and children.
Govt. Funding: National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney (NIDDK)
Grant Type: Time-Sensitive Obesity Policy and Program Evaluation (R01)

[modal_window title="DUAL-USE PARKS & PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN PARK DESERTS" invoke_title="PROJECT BRIEF" id="dualuse-parks-pa" show_on_load=""]Access to high quality park and recreational space is correlated with physical activity in adults and children. However, many communities, especially in minority and low-resource neighborhoods, lack adequate access to safe, high quality park space. Dual-use parks are a potential solution to this problem. Very few studies have specifically quantified the effects of dual-use parks as an intervention on physical activity. Leveraging a confirmed $5M philanthropic investment in 25 new dual-use park spaces in Houston schools, we propose a longitudinal, controlled natural experiment to evaluate the causal effect that these new parks may have on physical activity and physical fitness outcomes among residents of “park deserts.”[/modal_window]
Population Health Assessment in Cancer Center Catchment Areas: DLDCCC Enhancing Research In Cancer Health (EnRICH) Study
Govt. Funding: NIH National Cancer Institute (NCI)
Grant Type: Administrative Supplements for NCI-designated Cancer Centers
Submitted: May 2018
Expected Role (Effort): Co-I (5%); PI: Osborne K (BCM)
Expected Period: 09/01/2018 to 08/31/2019
[modal_window title="BCM CANCER CENTER ASSESSMENT" invoke_title="PROJECT BRIEF" id="nci-supplement-dldccc" show_on_load=""]To enable the DLDCCC to fulfill its mission of reducing morbidity and mortality from cancer care through research, clinical, education, and community outreach, there is a critical need to better characterize the populations and communities that reside in Harris County (in particular, the medically underserved population) and to identify barriers and facilitators to improve health behaviors, access to care, and effective communication. We propose to conduct a population health assessment to define and characterize the multi-level determinants of cancer health disparities in our catchment area. Our long-term goal is to reduce cancer disparities and communication inequalities.[/modal_window]
Multi-Level Evaluation of Racial/Ethnic and Socioeconomic Disparities in Liver Disease Outcomes.
Govt. Funding: National Institute of Health (NIH)
Grant Type: NIH Research Project Grant (R01)

Expected Period: 02/01/2019 to 01/31/2024
[modal_window title="DISPARITIES IN CIRRHOSIS OUTCOMES" invoke_title="PROJECT BRIEF" id="disparities-cirrhosis-second" show_on_load=""]Cirrhosis, a condition with high morbidity and mortality, is becoming increasingly common. Also, cirrhosis complications disproportionately affect racial/ethnic minorities and persons of low socioeconomic status (SES). The first key step towards eliminating substantial and growing disparities in cirrhosis prognosis is to understand the key factors contributing to these disparities. The proposal seeks to characterize the relative and absolute contributions of factors that drive these racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities using the National Institutes of Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Framework, which attributes health disparities to biological, behavioral, sociocultural, and healthcare factors at the individual patient, interpersonal, and community levels.[/modal_window]
Expanding a community network for cancer prevention to improve breast cancer screening and care coordination among medically underserved population.
Govt. Funding: Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT)
Grant Type: Cancer Prevention Program Grants
Submitted: October 2017
Expected Role (Effort): Co-I (10%); PI: Jibaja-Weiss M (BCM)
Expected Period: 03/01/2018 to 02/28/2021
[modal_window title="TARGETING CANCER PREVENTION PROGRAM" invoke_title="PROJECT BRIEF" id="oohd-screening-cprit" show_on_load=""]Overall, this project will allow the BCM Cancer Center (DLDCCC), through its Office of Outreach and Health Disparities (OOHD), to aggressively target high burden areas with their outreach activities (e.g. the mammography screening campaign). These results will also be invaluable to the partner organizations in prioritizing their limited Breast Cancer prevention resources.[/modal_window]
Novel approaches for understanding disparities in post-surgical outcomes in gastrointestinal cancer.
Non-Govt. funding: National Cancer Institute (NCI)
Grant type: NIH Research Project Grant (R01)
Submitted: June 2017
Expected Role (Effort): Co-I (12%); PI: Badr H (BCM)
Expected period: 04/01/2018 to 03/31/2023
[modal_window title="DISPARITIES IN POST-SURGICAL CANCER OUTCOMES" invoke_title="PROJECT BRIEF" id="disparities-gi-surgical" show_on_load=""]Although surgery is a cornerstone therapy for early stage gastrointestinal (GI) cancer, notable disparities exist among the underserved in post-surgical outcomes including hospital readmissions, quality of life (QOL), and 5-year survival. This multimethod study seeks to advance our understanding of GI cancer disparities by describing individual-level and social-contextual factors (e.g., social support from informal caregivers, social network composition and structure, and neighborhood social capital) that may affect patient self-management behaviors and outcomes post-discharge.[/modal_window]
